Thailand's transgender cabaret is world-renowned mainstream family entertainment — lavish, professional song-and-dance spectacle in the tradition of Las Vegas or Paris revues, performed by transgender artists. These are theatrical productions, not nightlife venues, and they're among the country's most polished stage shows.

The famous stages

• Tiffany's Show (Pattaya): one of the originals and most famous — a long-running, large-scale cabaret and the home of a major pageant (pageants);
• Alcazar (Pattaya): the other Pattaya institution — grand sets, elaborate costumes, big production numbers;
• Simon Cabaret (Phuket): the island's headline show, a staple of Phuket entertainment (our Phuket guide);
• Others operate in Bangkok, Chiang Mai and beyond — the form is nationwide.

What to expect

• Family-friendly spectacle: costumes, lip-synced international and Thai numbers, comedy sketches, cultural pieces — polished, colourful, broadly suitable and popular with tour groups and families alike;
• Real production values: serious costume, choreography and staging budgets — this is professional theatre;
• Post-show photos: performers typically greet the audience for paid photos afterward — tipping fairly for these is customary and the courteous thing to do.

• These are professional artists at work — applaud the craft, tip generously for photos, and engage as you would with any performers you admire;
• Book the established theatres through official channels;
• Keep the register celebratory, not gawking — the shows are a point of Thai pride, not a curiosity (etiquette).
